This letterpress poster is the result of several months of research both on the subjects of the Anatomy of Type and Type Glossary. Inspired by the craft of letterpress printing and a love for typography, Typography Deconstructed aims at providing a resource for educating those interested in what makes type… well, type. Each poster has a comprehensive list of typographical terms with each term being represented by the anatomy of the letter that best describes it visually.
So whether it be used as a resource for students wanting to learn more about type or simply for all you type lovers out there, Typography Deconstructed aims to please anyone.
Each poster is printed on Crane Lettra Pearl paper and is 16″ x 24″ in size. This poster was printed by Studio on Fire out of Minneapolis.

As much as you love Typography, it’s poorly kerned.
admin says:
Feb 25, 2011
Anon,
The point of the poster is to give the viewer a better understanding of the different elements of each individual character. We spaced the letters out according to the space available and not according to “proper” kerning methods. Remember, this is also a piece of artwork as it is an educational piece on the anatomy of type.
Thanks for the comment.

Wow. Can’t figure out why it is $100, PLUS shipping. It is cool for sure, but $100 for one printed piece of paper is when my wallet stays in my pocket.

Hi Dee,
We have been thinking of offering another version of the poster that is a high quality digital print on gloss. Would this interest you at all?

Agreed, a lower cost version for students and those who don’t absolutely love letterpress. Maybe a matte version which would be better for framing.

High quality on UNCOATED would be best. And at a reasonable price!

I agree! Especially since this poster is geared towards new designers..I think if you made a non-letterpress printed version the sales would really skyrocket.

Amazing work — love it. But agree, the price point is too high and will rip into the amount of profit you could get from this amazing poster – and yes, I understand the amount of work that goes into creating something like this. Most of your target audience (if it’s not clear from the comments above) can’t swing it.

$100 for a well researched authoritative hand printed poster illustrating the history and fundamentals of typography?
i’m befuddled that so many of the commenters do not recognize the superb quality and true value of this item.
my problem is that it would never make it to the wall if it didn’t get matted and framed. any chance in getting this matted?
Kati says:
Apr 6, 2011
Exactly my thought, too. For $100, I’d like it matted, mounted, simply framed, etc. That would be great.

I agree with William, “Anyone who thinks it is over priced doesn’t know anything about letterpress or what all goes into something like this.” If it’s too overpriced for you, you can always undermine designers and go to a site that lets you get a custom poster in 3-5 business days, slap it on some card stock and call it quality… sure it’ll be in Times New Roman, but whatever, it’s cheap!

Love this.
Kind of disappointed to see people complain about the price. Keep in mind, this isn’t like the posters you find at Walmart. Letterpress is a very different process with a very different result.
I found this over on the Beast Pieces blog, which is run by the folks that printed it. They talk a bit about the process, and they also offer a promo code for the rest of the month.

This is a GORGEOUS poster. And for those who think it’s overpriced, consider the amount of time and precision it took to print this, and the fact that it had to have at least two print runs, due to the different ink colors. Beautiful job, folks.

Awesome poster, but abusive price. I do understand the amount of work involved in the creation of this, but you shouldn’t expect to get rich overnight… I doubt that production (just printing) costs get over 20 bucks (if that’s the case, dude, you’re being screwed)

I don’t think that the price is “to much” for this print. Though a cheaper version for the public might increase the visability of the poster, increase the profit and through that more collectors of fine prints will notice the poster and increase sales on the high quality print.
Thats hoe I’d do it.
